What are Assessment and Development Centres

Development Centers (DC) for Leadership Development
Assessment Centers (AC) for Selection.

A "Centre" consists of a range of validated business exercises, simulations, role-plays and analysis exercises to measure specific competencies/skills (current and potential). The assessment is typically followed by a detailed report, feedback and development planning and /or coaching.

Assessment /Development Centres provide objective, highly valid behavioral and job related data on an individual for selection and development decisions, deployment and talent management.

Catalyst has access to over 150 multi-industry and cross-functional exercises that cover five-levels and 34 competencies.

Most Learning & Development interventions can be complemented with a range of ability, aptitude, cognitive and personality tests.

Catalyst and its associates are registered and certified users of the following psychometric tools:

Ability and Aptitude Tests
Personality and Cognitive Inventories

Benefits of tests are realized when they are appropriately applied, professionally administered by certified practitioners and ethically used.

Why Use Tests?

Research evidence shows that tests can provide more objective, reliable and relevant information concerning an individual's likelihood of success on the job and other job related factors that are difficult to observe or assess.

Catalyst is dedicated to ensuring the appropriate use and application of tests. We respect and uphold the "uniqueness" of individuals.

Catalyst Consultants and Associates who recommend certain tests are either psychometrists, psychologists or officially certified by the publishers to administer specific tests. We use psychometrically validated tests only.

Applications

Catalyst Clients have utilized tests in the following interventions:

  • Assessment Centres - to identify the best people suited for a job; identify job related capabilities difficult to measure in an interview
  • Development Centres ? to provide objective measures of strengths, development areas and potential
  • Assessment Based Executive Coaching ? fast track the coaching relationship and focus on primary reflection topics
  • Organizational Development Projects - supplementary information to diagnose underlying common themes and areas of potential conflict / differences
  • Workshops like Team Building, Leadership, Change and Consulting Skill Workshops ? raise personal / team awareness and understanding as a benchmark from which to focus development activities.
  • Off Site Management Facilitation ? team personality identification; bridge gaps, build awareness and understanding that transcends culture, personal and managerial styles.

Scores can be compared to norm databases like Hong Kong, Asia and International groups for benchmarking purposes on many of the tests.

Personality and Cognitive Inventories

MBTI? (Meyer Briggs Type Indicator)

Other psychometric tests can be administered by network associates who are registered psychologists and psychometrists. Examples include:

  • OPQ (Occupational Personality Questionnaire) from SHL
  • HBDI (Hermann Brain Dominance Inventory)
  • Harrison Profile

    MBTI? (Meyer Briggs Type Indicator)

The MBTI is the most widely used personality inventory, with two million people taking it every year. It identifies and sort preferences that are difficult to observe around how people take in information, make decisions, lifestyle and how stress is managed.

Sixteen 16 broad personality types are identified. The MBTI provides a simple way of seeing how people are alike and how they differ.

When people are aware of their differences, they can build better understanding and reduce conflict. The MBTI thus helps to improve teamwork and productivity whilst reducing unproductive interpersonal and intra-organizational conflict.

Individuals can use their MBTI results to understand their preferred learning styles, evaluate the fit between themselves and their jobs, and better manage time and stress.

The MBTI is an excellent, highly valid tool for coaching and development solutions.

Catalyst Clients have used the MBTI to supplement personality data on:

    1. Learning & Development interventions,
    2. As a stand alone Workshop for improving awareness and communication or
    3. Part of a Management off-site conference.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator? and MBTI? are registered trademarks of Consulting Psychologists Press, Palo Alto, California, USA.

MBTI Personality Based Workshop / Facilitated Offsite

The personality inventory is utilized in a facilitated focus group setting to build teams, personal awareness and enhance communication for individual and teams.

Teams obtain a deeper understanding of how different people take in information and make decisions and choices. It often creates a bridge between diverse cultures or functional groups as the focus is on personality and not cultural or functional differences.

Communication, Leadership and Conflict styles are related back to the profiles.
